Speeding Down the Interstate of Life When You Really Want a Scenic Route?

We live in a fast-paced, 10-lane Interstate, break-the-speed-limit sort of world.  There's little question about that, yet most of us would rather find a more meandering, scenery-lined road to travel.  It's not that we are willing to give up the results and rewards of the fast life. We just wish there was a more meaningful route to get us there.

Perhaps a clue lies in taking "the road less traveled."  We are competitive by nature, constantly comparing our achievements, talents, and possessions with those of others.  When we choose the road "frequently traveled," we find ourselves surrounded by hoards of others comparing themselves to us, even as we do unto them.  For as long as we place ourselves smack-dab in the middle of that competitive maelstrom, we may expect to experience the stress of the fast life.

Can you reap the same results and achieve the same rewards traveling a more solitary path? Yes, it is possible – when your reward system no longer requires recognition from others.  Once you understand that your results are the direct consequence of your actions, not the actions of those around you, a sense of peace takes over.  You can set your own goals, decide the actions you must take, and choose a road less traveled to take you there.

More directly, avoid playing follow-the-follower with your life.  The person you are attempting to model is probably doing the same with someone else.  Whatever your objectives this year, let them be yours alone.  Choose an approach to achieving your goals that is different from that of everyone else.  Best of all, line your route with the scenery that brings you peace, satisfaction and enjoyment.
